The Great Beyond

For our second exhibition of the 2026 season at Readymade, we have assembled a group of 30+ artists: participants in the 2026 DNA Residency and invited guests, focusing on various interpretations of The Great Beyond. Posing questions more than answers, the group explores themes of mystery, finality, the afterlife, and unknown frontiers. The contemporary artist, much like 19th-century explorers such as Lewis and Clark, or Rasmussen, map out new territories artistically rather than geographically.
The viewer is given a roadmap - cliff notes or signposts if you will - to these artists' pilgrimages in The Great Beyond. Similar to Jules Verne's classic Journey to the Center of the Earth, or Jacques Cousteau's excursions to the bottom of the sea in The Silent World, artists continue to discover uncharted territory within their art and in their psyches. This exhibition addresses multiple themes through a variety of media; death, the unknown, mystery, speculation about the fate of the planet, of animals, and the human race.
The show ranges from literal depictions of voyaging included in paintings by Theresa Bloise, Kathline Carr, Sam Colt, Andrew Fish, Peter Hutchinson, Daniel Ranalli, Abraham Storer, and James Wolf; to abstract visions of nothingness and the void by artists such as Olivia Baldwin, Douglas Degges, Susan Jennings, Jen Shepard, Martin Smick, Emily Wisneiwski, and Bert Yarborough; to more personal, self-reflective works by Rose Briccetti, Karsen Heagle, James Horner, Natalya Kochak, Katerina Lanfranco, Cheryl Schainfield, Kristin Schiele, and Barnaby Whitfield; to narratives of the new frontier by Adam Brent, Aaron Brodeur, Becky Brown, Sarah Dineen, Sam Jablon, Ryan Kish, Kristin Lamb, Jim Peters, and Whiting Tennis.
We hope there will still be many lingering questions - as well as some possible answers - in store for viewers of the exhibition. We also trust that visitors will experience as much surprise and facination during their own explorations of The Great Beyond as we had in curating this show. Fountain Street Gallery and Boston Center for the Arts have teamed up to present an indoor screening of digital media art that has been featured outdoors at Fountain Street’s Sidewalk Video Gallery.


A panel discussion with selected artists will follow. The Sidewalk Video Gallery launched in 2021 and more than 30 local, national, and international artists have exhibited to date. The work selected for the indoor screening at BCA represents the broad array of styles and thematic content on display 24/7, year-round at The Sidewalk venue.

Fountain Street has launched “The Sidewalk Video Gallery,” a public viewing gallery for video and other digital media art. Exhibitions of short, silent, experimental work will be displayed on two 50” monitors facing out from gallery windows at sidewalk level. The programming is designed to promote diversity and include a broad array of artists, styles, thematic content, and levels of experience. Partnerships with artists and curators, local educational and community-focused organizations, as well as Fountain Street Gallery artists round out the exhibition schedule.
